Spring is in the air and the outdoors are calling me. The sunshine, the soft, gentle breezes are whispering in my ear the earth’s lullaby. Birdsong calls us to wake up, dig in the dirt, and give the great sun a chance to recharge our cells with it’s healing energy.
Last year, my sister planted the small patch of garden outside my door with culinary herbs; rosemary, purple sage, thyme, oregano, and aloe vera.
Does that photo make you a little dizzy? I think it’s just the angle. But after the rains came everything burst into bloom!
I’ve always admired the gathering of fresh herbs and flowers, and those who make daisy chains and smudge wands out of their bounty. It’s such a Spring Thing to do when the world wakes up with new life and energy. Everything feels so alive!
I love the smell soooo much that I like to make a loose bundle to hang on cup hooks in the kitchen, so that every time I pass by, I get a good strong whiff of the fragrance.
Many fresh herbs will do, including lavender, sage, rosemary, thyme, and oregano. I even added some Lantana, as I love the smell that it gives off whenever I pass by.
Before cutting about 8 – 10 inch pieces of your herbs, take a minute to center yourself, connect with the nature of the plant and ask for it’s permission to take some of it’s pieces. After you have cut it, tell it thankyou. You may be surprised how it responds to your gracious attitude.
( Just take about 3 feet of twine or hemp string and wrap around your bundle after securing the bundle with a knot in the string. Finish wrapping by weaving the string through the wrapping and secure with another knot. )
I will wait until the leaves have dried thoroughly before wrapping my bundles in a tighter weave to later be used as space clearing wands. This not only lets you enjoy the fragrance a little longer, the beauty of the bouquet, but also helps prevent mold from forming from too much moisture. You will need some additional string to wrap it tighter, this time going all the way up to the end.
When used for Space Clearing, Sage has been the most popular traditionally, as it dispels negative energy. One can almost feel the change in the atmosphere immediately if they are tuned in to the sacred act of space clearing and are sensitive to these energies. Some of the other space clearing herbs would be sweet grass ( known to invite the positive, healing energies in) and Palo Santo ( which comes in stick form) and has grown in popularity for it’s wonderful fragrance and uplifting vibration.
Space clearing must be approached with a centered attitude, and with reverence and devotion. It is a good practice to start with an affirmation or a prayer to usher in the blessings that this sacred act can bestow on the home.
I like to use a feather to fan the smoke after the flame has been blown out, and the leaves are smoldering and giving off their smoky fragrance.
It is a good idea to open all the windows, and to have decluttered the space of all unwanted, unused, and any broken items. And please do not leave it unattended.
I hope you enjoyed this post. Please leave a comment below and let me know how you do your space clearing.
